Airbnb Damage Fees: Are Hosts Overquoting for Repairs?
We recently rented a lakeside house in Missouri for a group getaway. After checkout, the host billed us $600 for damages: a stained twin-sized comforter/pillow ($100) and a dent in the wall ($500) that supposedly resulted from a bunk bed rocking into the drywall. The wall wasn’t penetrated, and the comforters appeared to be on the lower end of the price spectrum. This has me questioning whether the damage charges are inflated, regardless of which guest might have caused them.
Edit: It’s worth noting that there wasn’t the kind of speculation about sexual activity I saw elsewhere. Only one guest in our group slept on the bunk bed, and he was the smallest person. The dent went unnoticed by others during checkout clean-up.
Additional context: When the host shared a photo of the damage, there was a previously patched spot adjacent to and larger than the dent, which suggests prior issues not caused by our group.
