Title: Goodbye to Airbnb? A Veteran Guest Reflects on a Platform Losing Its Spark

For more than a decade, I’ve been a devoted Airbnb guest. I’ve planned countless getaways—ski trips with friends, family reunions, romantic escapes with my husband, bachelorette weekends, and weddings. Traveling wasn’t always a given in my youth, so when the opportunity arose, Airbnb offered an affordable, flexible option. It became my preferred choice not only for price but for the distinctive locations, unique setups, and amenities you don’t find in traditional hotels. It’s served me well for over ten years.

Recently, I took what felt like my final Airbnb trip. I deleted the app and have zero intention of using it again. I’ve observed the quality of experiences and the level of customer service decline year after year. As a guest, my frustration has grown to the point where I feel compelled to be candid with both hosts and the platform about why I’m leaving. I’m only one voice, but I know others in my circle share these same concerns.

Common issues I’ve encountered as a guest

  • Excessive and unclear host rules: It’s reasonable to expect basic respect and care for a property. However, some listings introduce stringent rules and protracted checkout procedures that aren’t communicated until check-in, which feels like a bait-and-switch.

  • Questionable cleaning fees and burdensome expectations: For example, a six-day stay with a $150 cleaning fee is understandable if properly justified. Yet guests are sometimes asked to perform tasks that should happen before the stay ends—like stripping sheets, running the dishwasher, emptying and reloading trash, and wiping down appliances. If the cleaner’s role is to handle these tasks, such expectations can feel impractical and inconsistent with the guest experience.

  • Misleading or outdated listings: I’ve booked stays that looked charming in photos but turned out to be outdated or poorly maintained. In one instance, a ski-trip rental appeared near the slopes but lacked essential features, including a functional hot tub. Parking arrangements were misrepresented, leaving guests with limited or inconvenient options, sometimes requiring a long shuttle ride.

  • Missing or low-quality amenities: A recurring issue has been the absence of basic items—such as a cutting board, a proper wine opener, or sharp kitchen knives. And accommodations advertised to sleep several guests frequently provide far fewer towels than needed.

  • Pricing versus value: When comparing options, some hotels offer a clearer value proposition. In one case, a bed-and-breakfast option was not only cheaper but also included breakfast and additional conveniences like bicycles for exploring the area.

  • Subpar communication and slow resolution: On a recent issue, the hot water was out. I reached out to the host and received a response only after a long delay, followed by generic checkout instructions rather than a substantive fix. Reaching out to Airbnb support yielded no timely assistance, leaving the problem unresolved.

A reflection on what a platform should strive for

I started as a passionate supporter of a concept that seemed revolutionary: a marketplace that connected travelers with unique spaces and hosts, promising authentic experiences. Over time, that promise appears to have faded for me as a guest. It’s disheartening to watch a platform with tremendous potential lose sight of reliability, consistent service, and transparent communication.

What I hope for hosts and the broader community

  • Clarity and consistency: Clear, upfront rules and check-in/out procedures should be communicated before booking, not after arrival.

  • Honest representation: Listings should accurately reflect the property, including amenities, accessibility, parking, and any limitations that guests should know in advance.

  • Reasonable expectations for housekeeping: If a host relies on guest-provided tasks, this should be clearly stated and reasonable. Otherwise, guests should not be burdened with duties typically handled by professional services.

  • Reliable support: When issues arise, guests should receive timely, helpful responses from both hosts and the platform’s support team.

  • Transparent pricing: Fees and total costs should align with the value offered, with no surprising add-ons or unreasonable expectations.

Final thoughts

I am genuinely disappointed by the direction this platform has taken. The concept was transformative and inspiring, but the current experience has eroded trust and satisfaction for long-standing guests like me. It may be time to rethink whether this model best serves travelers and hosts in its present form, or to explore alternatives that restore the core elements that once made it exceptional. If more travelers find themselves in my shoes, we may see a broader shift away from this platform toward hotels, other lodging options, or different travel experiences altogether.
