Title: A Frustrating Airbnb Mix-Up: When the Calendar Wasn’t Blocked and the Stay Went Wrong

We recently treated ourselves to a beautiful getaway and chose a high-end rental to celebrate after a difficult few months. After an eight-hour drive, we arrived at the home we had booked for five days, excited for a relaxing stay.

upon arrival, we heard music from the pool area and assumed the hosts were greeting us warmly. A man in swim trunks approached and asked if we were the roofers. We explained that we had rented the home for the upcoming five days. He appeared confused and revealed that he had been staying there for a month already, visiting from the UK, and that the homeowner’s uncle was currently occupying the space. It became clear that the calendar had not been blocked to reflect this occupancy.

In an attempt to resolve the situation, my husband contacted the homeowner. Her reaction was extreme—yelling and cursing, telling us to “just find another place.” Finding alternate accommodations in a beach town is far from simple, especially on short notice.

We reached out to Airbnb for assistance. While their support apologized for the experience, they were unable to locate an alternative property, citing a lack of available rentals at the time. Ultimately, we had to relocate roughly 1.5 hours away from our original destination.

Lessons learned:
– Always verify that the calendar is fully up-to-date and that the host has officially blocked dates for any extended stays by family or guests.
– If possible, communicate directly with the host to confirm occupancy and access details well before arrival.
– In high-demand destinations, it’s wise to have a backup plan and be prepared for limited availability when an issue arises.

If you’ve encountered a similar situation or have tips for managing last-minute changes to travel plans, I’d love to hear your experiences and advice.
