Title: Unnerving Late-Night Encounter at a Casino Resort: Targeted or Coincidence?

Last night, my girlfriend and I stayed at a casino resort located in a less-than-ideal area. After checking in, we dropped our things in the room and I noticed an unusual signal: a paper clip wedged under the outside of our door. I kicked it aside “just in case” (paranoia or precaution, I’m not sure). It’s important to note this happened before we won anything.

We headed to the casino floor and, after a few minutes of playing slots, hit a major jackpot—several thousand dollars. Attendants arrived to payout and reset the machine. I did my best to keep the celebration low-key, mindful of safety. We immediately brought the cash back to our room and placed it in the safe, even though the amount wasn’t huge. Having read other online horror stories, I found myself keeping an eye out for anything unusual. Nothing seemed off.

We continued with the night’s plans, including an event we had tickets for, and had a great time. We even returned to the casino floor later and won a little more. By now, the drinks were flowing, and around 2:30 a.m. we headed back to our room. I locked the door and engaged the deadbolt, then we settled in with some YouTube before going to sleep.

Around 2:45 a.m., I heard scratching and clicking sounds outside the door. I sat up and checked the peephole. A very intimidating man stood outside, his face tattooed and his appearance giving the impression he had no business there. I’m a physically large person who doesn’t often feel intimidated, so this was unsettling. I was quite intoxicated, so I don’t recall exact details of his clothing or accessories, but I observed him standing for a moment, looking around, checking his phone, and reaching to knock. I responded from inside, “What’s up?” in a firm tone. He paused briefly, then said, “sorry, wrong room,” and moved around the corner.

The behavior seemed odd—he appeared to be trying to use a keycard (the scratching noise) and to manipulate the door handle. After this, I returned to bed, and my girlfriend was understandably shaken. Our state of intoxication likely amplified our jitters. I did not contact the front desk or law enforcement at the time for two reasons: I was not sober, and I doubted that reporting it would have altered the outcome.

Now I’m left wondering whether this person truly was attempting to break in or if he was simply seeking the wrong room. The room was a corner suite in a relatively secluded area; the timing—someone outside the door right after we celebrated a big win—feels too coincidental to ignore. Could this have been a targeted approach, or are we simply dealing with an unfortunate set of circumstances?

I’d appreciate input from readers: Do you think this was a genuine intrusion attempt, a case of mistaken identity, or just paranoia spurred by recent events? Any safety pointers for staying secure in casino resorts would also be welcome.

Notes:
– This incident occurred outside of Las Vegas, and we have since left the property.
– We did not involve the front desk or police at the time, due to intoxication and skepticism about reporting outcomes.
