Entire place to yourself, but the host is spending the weekend: what are my options?
I recently relocated for work and booked a month-long rental while I search for a more permanent home. I prefer having my own space, so I chose a townhome advertised as an entire unit for one guest. Upon check-in, the host was there to show me the space, share the Wi-Fi details, and hand over the front-door key. She mentioned a locked room upstairs that’s hers, and I assumed that’s where she stays when the rental isn’t in use.
For the first week, I enjoyed the entire property as advertised. Then today I received a message from the host saying she will be spending the weekend on-site. The listing explicitly stated “entire place to yourself” and did not mention any temporary on-site presence by the host. This isn’t a duplex or similar setup. The host plans to occupy the bedroom across the hall from mine, effectively converting the rental from an entire private space to a private bedroom with shared access to the shower, living room, and kitchen.
What steps can I take to address this situation? How should I approach negotiating terms or seeking a resolution with the host or the rental platform? Are there guidelines for ensuring the listing matches the actual experience, particularly when the host’s presence alters the level of privacy promised upfront?
