Airbnb Key Exchange: When Hosts Require a 16km Trip for Pickup

A recent experience has left me wondering what’s considered normal for key exchanges when staying in an Airbnb. In this case, the host asked me to make a 16-kilometer round trip to collect the keys from a different city than where I’m staying.

Is this common practice? In some previous stays, I’ve been able to arrange a key exchange within a short walk or a brief travel distance in the same town, which feels reasonable. However, this situation seems excessive.

When I questioned the host about the arrangement, their response was confrontational, denying that a same-town key exchange had been agreed upon. Yet the public documentation only states: “contact us to arrange key exchange.” Based on that wording, I assumed a nearby exchange in the same town would be feasible.

I’ve invested a significant amount of money to stay in this apartment, including an out-of-season rate and a substantial security deposit. On top of that, the keys are said to be available for pickup at 4pm, which coincides with my official check-in time. This setup effectively consumes the first day of my vacation due to the travel required for the key handoff.

I can’t find an official Airbnb policy addressing this specific scenario. As a guest, am I simply at the host’s mercy and expected to accommodate their demands? It would have been helpful if this requirement had been clearly communicated at the time of booking rather than being announced the day before check-in.
